Philippine Fashion Wear Gains Popularity in London

Under the brand Manila Wear, unique fashion pieces from the Philippine Fashion industry bagged praises and positive reviews during the 2nd International Fashion Showcase (IFS) in London.
Manila Wear is a brand that reflects the distinct Filipino fashion style, and captures the carefree and fun Philippine lifestyle. Through the IFS, local fashion brands Aranaz and Rags2Riches were given international market exposure and media mileage. From February 15 to 19, buyers, guests, media outfits and bloggers gathered at the Philippine Embassy in London to view the Spring and Summer collection of these brands.

“It was a great opportunity to introduce our brand to the UK market. Our products received a very warm welcome, and many were amazed at our capabilities,” said Amina Aranaz-Alunan, designer and proprietress of Aranaz.

In partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) in London, Philippine British Council, and the Philippine Embassy, the exhibit was organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), and the Garments and Textile Industry Development Office (GTIDO).  Through the partnership between the British Council and the British Fashion Council, the IFS showcased emerging designers from 27 participating countries to the European market. It was held during the London Fashion Week, and took place in various embassies and cultural institutes.

“The experience in IFS gave us feedback and comments on our designs which can be used to further improve our future collections,” Rags2Riches sales and marketing manager Bernadette Lindres said. Rag2Riches uses upcycled fabric scraps purchased from garment manufacturers, as well as organic and native weaves from indigenous communities to create their products. The company empowers Filipino women living in the Payatas dumpsite by giving them livelihood and training them to be future entrepreneurs.

Aranaz and Rags2Riches will join the upcoming 57th edition of Manila FAME (or Furnishings and Apparel Manufacturers' Exchange), the country’s premier trade platform for furniture and furnishings, holiday décor and gift items and fashion accessories, from 14 to 17 March 2013 at the SMX Convention Center.

The Manila FAME is co-located with major event brands Manila Now, CEBUNEXT, and Bijoux Cebu to create a bigger stage in showcasing Philippine design and artisanship through high quality export products.
