Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2014: Primed for the Mainstream

Never losing their faith in the Philippine Fashion industry, the Espino brothers, Audie and Joey Jr., together with Runway Productions, Cal Carrie’s International Inc., EsAc, and Masters School for Models are set to present the Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2014 collections from May 28 to June 1 at the SMX Convention Center and SM Mall of Asia.
From the published schedule, the more interesting shows and events seem to be the Lee 125-years celebration spread over three days, SM Woman, Emperador presents PhFW Party and longtime fashion insider Nardie Presa’s show.

One intriguing new entry is Yevgeniya Alexandrovna Yushkova, who has her own label called YAY. Now based in Manila, she is originally from Izhevsk, Udmurtiya, in Russia and was educated at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California.

“YAY convertible clothing allows you to save much-needed time in this fast-paced universe. A single outfit will accompany you from a workplace to a dinner with friends, followed by an eventful and fun night. You can accomplish all three looks with YAY without going home to change. The YAY woman loves to be in control of her look and destiny,” she writes in her blog www.yaydesigns.com.

What I’m most excited about, though, is the decision of the unassuming and unpretentious Pat Santos to finally join the fashion fray after toiling in obscurity as a ready-to-wear designer for SM Department Store. Last year, the supermall launched Santos’s made-to-order line.

“I would say that SM is one of the greatest gifts that our God has given to me. I’ve experienced all types of hardships that have led me to become a better person and to be able to live comfortably. For SM to trust me and my capability that much, it has given me an opportunity to make it big,” Santos said in our previous interview. “I want people to experience the other side of my artistic inclinations and craftsmanship. I hope every Filipino will learn to appreciate that our product is worth buying for.”

So, how is the response so far to his eponymous brand and recent bridal collections?

“People are now more familiar with the name Pat Santos. Their curiosity about my aesthetic is increasing, and they have somehow become trustful of me and have become more confident when wearing my creations,” Pat said with pride.

He plans to open a few shops around areas where fashion is happening, besides having a stronger presence at SM malls, to give people a broader understanding of his fashion sense. Part of these expansion plans is joining PhFW.

“It will be a great experience not only to show the artistic inclinations that I’ve got but also to gain more friends in the fashion industry,” Pat intimates. “I’ll be featuring the latest lace materials with embellishments and skin-tone chiffon fabric to enhance the silhouette or shapes of Filipino women. The colors of my creations are the latest tones like soft lilac, grayish ice blue and my signature colors of black and gold.”

Pat’s minimalist looks can easily translate from runway to reality. With a little bit of nepotism, I dressed my pretty nieces in his Blanc et Noir collection to underscore the wearability factor of his creations.

“Since Filipino women are not exaggerated dressers and prefer only simple looks, I think they can appreciate my creations because they flatter every woman,” Pat explains. “I can only offer the perfect balance of my aesthetic, which will enhance the class and sophistication of the people who will luckily experience wearing my clothes.”

Fashion Philippines Fashion Takes Part in Hong Kong Fashion Access 2014

Fashion Philippines, a government-initiated branding initiative, will once again participated in the Fashion Access in Hong Kong 2014. The Philippines’ participation is organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, the export promotions arm of the Department of Trade and Industry, in partnership with the Garments and Textile Industry Development Office. Under the Fashion Philippines brand, the participation will be spearheaded by 20 local designers and manufacturers.
As part of CITEM’s continuous bid in helping revive and fortify the Philippine Fashion industry, Fashion Philippines at Fashion Access will focus on the unique design sensibility of the Filipino craftsmen and the range of indigenous materials that the country offers. The country’s tropical location and rich, cultural heritage have blessed it with indigenous materials that range from local textiles such as raffia, banig, and ikat weaves, to natural materials such as shells and animal horns. Under the skillful hands of the Filipino craftsmen, these materials are transformed into high-quality fashion products that highlight their treatment to form, function, and design.

“The Filipino designers and craftsmen continuously challenge the limits of both material and technique. It is not enough to project what the Philippine design is about —they also want to present what Philippine design will be, and could be about. Rich, vibrant, and contemporary fashion accessories and wearables are the signature of Fashion Philippines,” said Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of CITEM.

The local fashion industry is certainly on the rise as it remains to be one of the Philippines’ key export sectors. Keen attention to design details and craftsmanship are its selling points that resonate well with the demands from the international market. With these strengths, there is definitely room for the Philippine fashion industry to become part of the $1.1 trillion global fashion market. With its offerings of top-quality, tropical themed apparel, jewelry, bags and fashion accessories, Fashion Philippines will help establish the country as a number one destination for fashion pieces.

Fashion Access Hong Kong run from March 31 to April 2 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. Fashion Access stands out as the only sourcing hub which showcases "fashion from head to toe," offering international buyers and suppliers a unique venue to discover new products. This bi-annual trade show is organized by APLF, a private international events organizer.

Philippine Fashion to Brace the Runways of Canada

Filipino pride is poised to once again sweep across the nation and the world, with Canada Philippine Fashion Week (CPFW) set to showcase Philippine Fashion, Filipino culture, creativity, and artistry through chic, fresh, and fabulous fashion designs in the runways of Toronto, Canada from June 9 to 14, 2014.
Filipino icons, visionaries, and rising stars in the field of fashion are joining forces to not only promote and nurture Filipinos’ fashion talent in the Philippines and Canada but also aid children with disabilities in both countries through the Kol Hope Foundation for Children.

CPFW is founded by Filipino-Canadian Executive Director Jeff Rustia. While relatively young, CPFW has already earned nods from prestigious organizations in and out of the Philippines, leading it to garner distinctions such as the FEO 2014 Award for Best New Festival of the Year. CPFW has made a name for itself both as a fashion and travel event that is a must-see in Toronto, Canada.

As a teaser for things to come, CPFW held a press conference in the Shangri-La Hotel in the Philippines. Fil-Am models wowed the crowd with clothes boasting of intricate designs that can only come from Filipinos’ ingenuity and border-less imaginations. These one-of-a-kind creations were a hit among the country’s fashion-savvy residents and attracted high-profile personalities including the Philippine Consul General.

The Canada Philippine Fashion Week is endorsed by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of Tourism. It is also receiving support from the Ontario government through the Ministry of Tourism, Sport, and Culture.

Penshoppe: Philippine Fashion Retailer to dress up Middle East

Clothing retail chain Penshoppe, a brand of Cebu, Philippine Fashion company Golden ABC, said it is going to expand further into the Middle East as part of an “aggressive expansion programme” and will open up to 10 new stores in the region in the near future.
The company, which is seemingly following the footsteps of the large Filipino diaspora in the Middle East, is eyeing Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Jordan for the expansion in addition to its current presence of 10 stores in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE.

The new stores are planned to materialise through investments of local partners with whom the firm is currently negotiating, said Golden ABC’s chief executive officer Bernie Liu. Planned locations are Doha, Kuwait City, Muscat, as well as Amman and Aqaba.

Penshoppe is one of the most popular retailers of so-called ready-to-wear fashion in the Philippines where it currently operates around 600 outlets. Abroad, the number of stores is currently 25 and should rise to over 50 in the coming five years as part of Golden ABC’s “ambition to globalise its business and become the most admired Asian fashion brands company,” as Liu put it.

Due to the heavy concentration of Filipinos in Saudi Arabia, the number of stores there should rise the most to around 30 by 2018, the company said in an earlier statement.

While it mainly addresses overseas Filipinos, it also strives to reach out to the local population. For example, when Penshoppe started in 2010 in Saudi Arabia, the share of revenue made with Filipino customers was around 95%, but later dropped to around 65% as locals quickly got familiar with the new clothing brand.

Other countries for expansion include Indonesia and Cambodia, the company said, while it wants to open another 25 new stores domestically. Later on, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and even Australia are on the cards.

Golden ABC was founded in 1986 in Cebu and has since grown to one of the largest clothing retailers in the Philippines. Its brand include, besides Penshoppe, Oxygen, ForMe, Memo, Regatta, Tyler and its direct selling subsidiary Red Logo. None of the latter brands are included in the expansion abroad yet, though.

Penshoppe is an interesting and not-so-common example for entrepreneurship turned global success in the Philippines. The parent company Golden ABC started in 1986 as a family garment business producing T-shirts for company giveaways. Later on, they began developing their own T-shirt designs, embarked on producing other types of clothes and eventually introduced their own casual fashion brands at affordable prices.

This strategy, unknown then in the Philippines until the advent of foreign casual-fashion outlets in recent years, has proven very successful and led to sales growth in double-digit percentage figures over the years and a strong brand recognition domestically and from the Filipino community overseas supported by advertisements featuring well-known Filipino celebrity models. And exactly this brand recognition abroad is the powder that now fires Penshoppe’s Middle East expansion.
