Manila FAME to Showcase Best of Philippine Fashion via Manila Wear

Doing what it has already achieved for the country’s furniture, home decor, and gifts sector, the 59th edition of Manila FAME on March 14 to 17 will put the special spotlight on fashion and its emerging and established talents. Manila FAME is the country’s premiere design and lifestyle event held every March and October.
In past Manila FAME events at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, the big exhibitors that progressively keep visitors impressed during each show are the furniture manufacturers. A visual feast, special settings are a design marvel by themselves. Interactive areas, such as those featuring communities demonstrating their traditional crafts, add informative and interesting breadth to the event. The fashion area, however, is almost sidelined as it gets lesser space and is more toned down in its presentation.
This season, however, organizers behind the event promise to offer international buyers something more exciting both in the presentation of the exhibitors as well as the clothes and accessories designs of the participants.

To ensure the Philippine Fashion exhibit truly gets noticed, the Center for International Trade and Expositions (CITEM) and the Garments and Textile Industry Development Office (GTIDO) has tapped seasoned and rising fashion designers to present their best tropical resort collection. CITEM, which mounts the Manila FAME events, is an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry.
No less than internationally known fashion designer Josie Natori is spearheading the project in collaboration with Manila FAME Creative Director Budji Layug in the interpretation of the “Urban Resort” design concept. Expect a merging of artisanal craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics in the executing of the tropical resort collections.

It’s a daunting task that Layug, who has received distinction for his sleek furniture designs and advocacy of utilizing indigenous materials like bamboo, willingly accepted. He sees Manila Wear in March as just the beginning of a more long-term process.
In a press gathering organized by CITEM on Tuesday, February 25, Layug said, “The challenge really is how to present Philippine design—in home and fashion—to the world. And perhaps, after the March show, we will have to step back and review where we are with the program to be able to move forward and do a collection in October. The challenge is how to unify the young talents and the craftsmen, and how the fresh ideas can mature into a whole new collection.”

Among these designers are Amina Aranaz-Alunan, Carissa Cruz-Evangelista, Maco Custodio, Lally Dizon, Natalya Lagdameo, Adante Leyesa, Joyce Makitalo, Arnel Papa, Malou Romero, Ken Samudio, and Nicole Whisenhunt.
Other designers are Jun Artajo, Tipay Caintic, Joel Escober, Twinkle Ferraren, Anne Marie Saguil, and Lulu Tan-Gan will display their intricately handcrafted apparels with their own take on Manila Wear.

Rosvi Gaetos, CITEM Executive Director revealed that Natori has been mentoring the young talents, collaborating with CITEM and teaching them the basics of expanding their business and exporting abroad.
Filip+Inna’s Len Cabili, known for her masterful use of indigenous materials in modernist designs, will present her new collection. Tipay Caintic, on the other hand, recently got the attention of international media when she presented her Yolanda-themed collection during London Fashion Week.

Albert Andrada: The Visionary Behind Paris Hilton’s Grammy Dress

Albert Andrada was filled with excitement when he started talking about Paris Hilton at the 2014 Grammy Awards, where the heiress wore the Filipino designer's fully-sequined ivory dress.

The dress was part of the designer's "Chinese Empress" collection from last year's Philippine Fashion Week.

"It's not about me, it's for the whole Philippines," Andrada said. "I just get too excited when I talk to people. I'm so proud of being a Filipino. People come to me and call me every hour asking about it."

Haus of Milani, a fashion house for the stars created by celebrity stylists, saw Andrada's clothes online.

"It only started in social networks. When they started looking at my dresses... They messaged me if I'm interested in sending clothes to Haus. They asked me if I'm interested [since] last year," he told.

Hilton received mostly positive feedback from pundits at Marie Claire magazine, while Sheknows.com even referred to the socialite as the "surprised best dressed" at the event. Other websites and fashion blogs also included Hilton in their best-dressed lists.

"It's a Chinese-inspired dress. It was fully sequined and embellished with white opal crystals and white sheer tulle [that's] skin-tone. If you see it from the back, it's like you're nude but you're not because there's skin-tone lining and skin-tone tulle," Andrada said.

But even before Hilton sashayed down the red carpet, another celebrity had been eyeing the dress: Jennifer Lopez.

"The first client that got attracted to the dress was actually J.Lo," Andrada told GMA News Online. "But the fitting was too tight for her, although she was kissing the dress already. So, I thought I didn't have a chance to dress up a celebrity."

"The other morning, when I woke up and I opened my phone—I was so surprised when they were tweeting already. They were all over Instagram, they were all over Facebook. I'm so happy for the reason that I'm a Filipino, I'm so proud... I'm so proud," he added.

Andrada has another reason to celebrate: as part of its celebration of Chinese New Year, Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila showcased his "Shanghai Nights" collection at its restaurant Spiral.
"I find Sofitel to be a very nice hotel, I feel at home here. I find the people around very warm and every season, they have something for everybody, especially in fashion, too. I just get inspired by collaborating with them," the designer said.

For the 15-piece collection, the designer created elegant pieces using wrinkled taffeta, chinese brocade, chiffon, duchess satin, and french lace fabrics.

According to Albert, "I called it Shanghai Nights because in Shanghai, you see a lot of reds in the Chinese lantern during this time of the year and I used amethyst because it is a lucky gem for them. Also, I used lots of gold, white, and black."

And just like most of his shows in the past, the designer concluded the show with a striking and sophisticated beige wedding dress made of tulle, encrusted with Colorado topaz, silver, and gold Swarovski crystals, all the while stressing that not all brides should opt to be "sweet."

"I think, I would like to show the people that you could wear anything and you don't have to be the sweet bride, you could also be the sophisticated, and the elegant bride," he said.

"I crystallized it [because] my aesthetic is always opulent," he added.

Swedish retail giant H&M opens at SM’s new Mega Fashion Hall

Finally, the much-awaited Swedish retail giant H&M will open at SM Megamall’s new wing, the Mega Fashion Hall. When it opens its doors to the public on Jan. 28, the Mega Fashion Hall will add an exciting new dimension to Philippine Fashion, shopping, leisure, and entertainment in the iconic mall that is said to have started the malling phenomenon in the Philippines.
There is a lot of buzz on SM Megamall’s game-changing new wing, which will showcase a brave new world of international global brands that will have their first stores in the Philippines.  Aside from H&M, there are Vero Moda, a women’s clothing store, American furniture brand Crate & Barrel, and skincare and perfume line Philosophy.

The Mega Fashion Hall will also have specialty global restaurants such as Tim Ho Wan, the Michelin-star dimsum restaurant from Hong Kong, as well as lifestyle elements such as an Olympic-sized ice-skating rink, 14 lanes of state-of-the-art bowling, and the first IMAX Theater in the Philippines.

With all these exciting new lifestyle features, the mall tapped no less than renowned American photographer Scott Schuman, founder/editor of one of the top fashion blogs in the world, to shoot its advertising campaign.

Schuman pioneered street-style photography in various fashion capitals of the world. And for the campaign, he photographed 10 men and women of style along the streets of Ortigas Center where SM Megamall is located. Each of them is accomplished in their work, and is known for their impeccable style. Collectively, they represent the innovative, independent, and international-oriented lifestyle Mega Fashion Hall aims to achieve.

These include gemologist and jewelry designer Janina Dizon-Hoschka; milliner, fashion designer, corsetiere Mitch Dulce whose works have been featured in American TV shows Gossip Girl and The Carrie Diaries; and Australian-born fashion blogger, host, and model Kim Jones.

Jessica Connelly is a Filipino-Australian model and singer; as is Turbo Goth vocalist Sarah Gaugler, a Filipino-American model and visual tattoo artist. Kai Lim is a mom and entrepreneur for Cura V, a lifestyle concept store, while Eughie Teng is the managing director of the Elite Manila Philippine Modeling Agency.

Completing the mix are businessman Mike Concepcion, who is behind Yabu: the House of Katsu, Manila Pop Up, and Ronnie and Joe Optical Salon; Guamanian football player Jonah Romero; and TV commercial director Sid Maderazo.

Police Sunglassess Celebrates their 30th Year Anniversary

2013 is a special year for Italian lifestyle brand Police as it celebrates 30 years of fashionable lifestyle accessories. Founded in 1983, Police has made a name for itself in providing cutting edge eyewear such as the iconic blue tinted mirror sunglasses. Included in Police’s line of lifestyle essentials are its roster of watches, jewelry, leather goods, perfumes and apparel, thus cementing its status as a reputable lifestyle brand.
“For 30 years, Police has maintained its tradition of producing trendy, high-quality eyewear and accessories. For its anniversary, we continue this tradition by introducing a brand new line that evokes style and attitude, two qualities that can be found in all of our products,” remarks Police Brand Manager Stefano Bozzo.
Bozzo shares that since the inception of Police in the early 1980’s, the brand has introduced iconic styles that crossed borders and represented generations. One of these styles, introduced in the late 1980’s, was the double profile glasses, a unique design with a square and classical shape which embellished the frontal part of the face.
The style was followed in the early 1990’s when Police introduced the rock and roll lifestyle and urban fashion to its line of eyewear. In 1993, Police made another splash with the introduction of the iconic blue mirrored lens. The style became a great success and continues to be popular today.
Hollywood picked up on the Police lifestyle trend in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Global brand ambassadors such as Bruce Willis, George Clooney, David Beckham and Antonio Banderas brought their own unique appeal to Police. The youth also became a focal point of the brand, when Police launched its Be Younique campaign in 2010.
From iconic aviators to trend-setting blue tinted eyewear, Police is continuing the trend by riding on the K-Pop wave. From TV dramas, Korean music, food and fashion, it’s no doubt that K-Pop is here to stay. Bozzo reveals that together with Police’s 30th anniversary, the brand is set to introduce the Police K-Pop line.
The line pays homage to Police Eyewear’s best-selling blue-tinted sunglasses, the S8299 model, which features a metal frame and polarized mirror lenses. The Police K-Pop Line updates the best-selling look with new colored lenses while adding a sophisticated look and feel.

Following the footsteps of popular Police brand ambassadors, Police has also tapped three local talents to represent the Police lifestyle in the Philippine Fashion. Bozzo reveals that these three ambassadors were selected as they embody what Police is all about. Young, cutting edge and adored by many, actor Will Devaughn, actress Roxanne Barcelo and top male fashion blogger David Guison were tapped to be the new faces of Police.
“This year and for the last 30, Police has been committed in producing eyewear that isn’t just an accessory, but a lifestyle essential that transforms a person’s look and enhances facial features while protecting the eyes. It is through cutting edge eyewear that Police helps individuals showcase their unique style, no matter their personality or taste,” concludes Bozzo.

Philippine Fashion Week SS2014 - Cream Silk Luxewear Collection

Presented by the conditioner extraordinaire, the Luxewear collection for the Philippine Fashion Week SS2014  opened with an all-green Jerome Salaya Ang collection for Cream Silk. Models sashayed to the tune of an orchestra, including Hair Fall Defense’s celebrity endorser Sam Pinto.
Chris Diaz followed with his collection “Windfall” which featured dark sensual clothes inspired by the behavior and movement of moths. Done in tulle, charmeuse, crepe-de-chine, jerseys, and lace, the largely black collection was lightened at the end by dresses done in lavender, rose, and pomegranate hues.
Delby Bragais went for “Global Ethnicity” this season. Seeming indigenous embellishments easily caught the eye as they were strategically placed in the center of each piece. But by mixing together purple, orange, yellow, fuchsia, and green, the collection can’t be placed to be coming from here or there.
Veejay created sportswear-inspired looks that take pride in urban chicness and casual comfort. With a mixture of sporty and feminine elements, Floresca took utilitarian fashion to a whole new level with pieces like a cropped button-down with a sheer poncho that extends its back to the ground as well as a pocketed hooded vest with paneled detailing. Staying true to the theme, Veejay accessorized the looks with denim caps and aviator shades.
