January is Philippine Tropical Fabrics Month

In order to commercialize the use of ethnic textiles and tropical fibres, the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) is celebrating the month of January as "Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Month".

DOST-PTRI spearheads the technological development and research on tropical textiles of Philippines. The Institute is heading the celebrations of the tropical fabrics month, based on the celebration of the Philippine Tropical Fabrics Day held in January last year. As part of PTF Month, PTRI is focusing on promoting sustainable use of domestic indigenous fibers like abaca, piña, Philippine silk and banana.

It will adopt more aggressive approach to accelerate commercialization of the nation’s tropical fibre technologies. During the current year, it would carry out proactive advocacy campaigns to sustainably promote local neo-ethnic and tropical fibres.

As part of its strategy, PTRI would try to unify its efforts in developing ethnic textiles and local tropical fabrics, thus enhancing the competitiveness and prospects of the domestic fibre, garment and textile industries. A Philippine fashion show "Bagong Habi, Salinlahi: Cutting-edge Philippine Textiles" would be held on February 8, 2012 to feature domestic fibres in a new avatar. Several original, contemporary and exciting fashion creations would be showcased at the event.

Many renowned and young promising designers would display their creations prepared using innovative indigenous weaves hailed as new-ethnic fabrics. The weaves include hablon of Iloilo, abel of Ilocos Norte, inaul of Maguindanao and several weaves from the Cordilleras. Also to be showcased at the show are eye-catching creations prepared by PTRI from tropical fibres like jute, maguey and water hyacinth.

Abreeza Runway Preview 2012 Presents Davao Elite Fashion Group

The recent Philippine Fashion show at the Abreeza Mall’s Activity Centre (in partnership with M Magazine represented by Ian Garcia) staged by the Davao Elite Fashion Group’s popular designers namely Popoy Barba, Aztec Barba, Dodjie Batu, Edgar Buyan and Emi Englis capture these elements as shown in their creative couture pieces. Their clothes mark their path and leave footprints worth following. These are only five of the original 12 designers who comprise the Davao Elite Fashion Group (DEFG). These talented fashion designers are acknowledged as the most established ones in Davao City whose professional portfolio and experience in the highly competitive field of fashion have been noticed locally, nationally and even internationally.

Fashion is a language expressed in different ways. Each designer brings his own artistic conception to life, and similarities not withstanding, there is that particular touch that makes each designer’s collection unique. Of course, the designers’ muses, themselves, who are strong, confident, successful, and respected women in Davao society, inspire these designers to create fashion while, at the same time, giving them the power to feel like they own the clothes. Philippine Fashion Designer brothers Popoy and Aztec Barba of Patahian have been vocal to one and all that they like the women they dress to look important. “Power is so sexy on Davao’s society women,” both claim as they looked towards the direction where the mother-and-daughter team of Maridol and Bea Lopez Gonzales were seated.

At the Abreeza Runway Fashion Preview held last January 17, 2012, Aztec Barba, Popoy Barba and Emi Englis showed the same body skimming silhouettes, the recognizable Halston-influenced fluid jersey dresses and svelte clothes, this time with the added drapes in every imaginable form, that make women feel sexy in an effortless and light way. As Emi Englis would put it, “There is a lot of hard work and technique involved in creating the sophisticated-minimalist collection I am showing the fashionistas tonight.” The Popoy Barba, Aztec Barba and Emi Englis collections shown were utterly simple and chic that you’d think they’re the antidote to fussy haute couture dressing. The lithe models did their signature catwalk on the runway like they were modern, exotic versions of Greek maidens complete with the “voodoo doll make up” by Otoi Mercado.

Even Emi Englis’ comfortable shirt that night was designed to coordinate with his runway collection done so stylishly in black. This writer had to restrain himself from asking the respected and well-loved designer cum Philippine Women’s College-Davao Fashion Design teacher for the wearable work of art to take home to add to his two other Englis pieces.

It was such a welcome treat in this first fashion show for the Abreeza Mall (and for Davao City for that matter) for the new year that Dodjie Batu and Edgar Buyan (now sporting his sinabunutan look) opted to show their men’s collection. As the hunky male models strutted on the fashion ramp, mind you, but the fashionable ladies, matronas, and Jongjong Carriedo in the audience were very attentive, indeed! Interesting to note was that there were more men of varying ages in the SRO crowd watching the fashion event.

In their true fashion spirit, both Dodjie Batu and Edgar Buyan showcased bold and even irreverent menswear. It’s a fusion of the traditional with the colourful unexpected which sums up what dandy dressing in Philippine style is all about. It’s fashion for the brave, radical ones. It is fashion for today’s self-indulgent, young males who don’t give a damn about what others will say! And it’s their enviable youth and six-pack abs with matching bulging pectorals and biceps which give them that privilege to do so.

“The Abreeza Mall’s Runway Fashion Preview 2012 was the first and biggest fashion show that we had in Davao City so far. The collections were taken from what the DEFG designers presented in the Philippine Fashion Week in Manila last year. And due to the fashionistas’ demands, we are happy and grateful to have been given the opportunity to share our collections to our fellow Davaoenos at the Abreeza Mall of Davao City,” said Emi Englis.

Sharing their talents as well were makeup maverick Otoi Mercado, Hairzone Salon and Spa Professionals by Angelo Falconi, and Salon de Rose. Other participants included Chimes Specialty Store as represented by Renren Villena, Soul Lifestyle, the Maze, and Mags fashion store. Rancheros provided the nourishment.

Lito Perez Sets His Continental Ilustrado-Inspired ‘barong’ in Historic Pila

For this special shoot that pays tribute to Kasuotang Pilipino, Lito Perez, president of the 30-year-old Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines, brings back the high-style luxury of Barong Tagalog as worn by the elite ilustrado class in the Spanish era. “They were men of cosmopolitan style,” notes Perez of Camp Suki fame, “who traveled frequently abroad, usually in Europe, and were up-to-date on the latest in menswear and male grooming.” Thus, the “new” look of Perez’s barong designs reflects strong continental influences.

“It’s inspired by the stately silhouettes the European aristocrats wore at the turn of the century. The collar is high and standing to give the wearer a dignified appearance; the embellishments rich and elaborate; and the fabric elegant as our piña,” says Perez. To contemporize his Philippine Fashion collection, Perez tapers the barong close to the body, and uses colorful shades of piña embellished with embroidery and beadwork. For a metallic black piña barong, for instance, he uses white lace embroidery to accentuate the cuffs, with mother-of-pearl stones for buttons.

On a yellow piña with amber silk thread embroidery on the bodice, Perez uses a burst of matte gold beadwork on the collar and on the loose, buttonless cuffs. The perfect setting for the colonial-inspired collection is the historical town of Pila, Laguna, famous for its grand period homes. According to Philippine historian Dr. Luciano Santiago, Pila is the only town in the country that is formally recognized as an important historical site by the Church and the State.

In 2000, the National Historical Institute of the Philippines declared the town plaza of Pila and its surrounding colonial houses a historical landmark. The town has 35 well-maintained, turn-of-the-century structures, of which 28 are ancestral. In 2002, the Diocese of San Pablo proclaimed the parish church of San Antonio de Padua de Pila as the Diocesan Shrine of St. Anthony. It is the first Antonine church in the Philippines and was built by the Franciscans who arrived in Pila in 1578 to spread the Catholic faith. This shoot was done in Vic del Mundo’s unique Asian-tropical garden home in nipa and buli, and in Dr. Mesiton Rivera’s turn-of-the-century ancestral home.

Michael Cinco Does Eco-couture for Tyra Banks and Dresses up Royals’ Pets

Michael Cinco, another Dubai-based Philippine Fashion designer, was featured twice on the popular America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) last year—as guest designer in Cycle 16 early in the year, and as finale designer in the last quarter’s Cycle 17 ANTM All-Stars. After about a decade in the Gulf, Samar-born Michael, a fine arts scholar of the University of the Philippines, is moving into the international limelight. He shares how he got on the ANTM show.

“One of the producers of ANTM Cycle 16 is a Filipino. His name is Michael Carandang, and he contacted me via Facebook. I submitted my designs and he showed them to Tyra Banks. My clothes were made out of recycled materials. [My episode was] shot in a landfill by Nigel Barker.” “Tyra Banks asked me to create haute couture pieces from recycled materials for ANTM. After that shoot, I found out that I could use things that we usually throw out as beautiful ornaments on couture dresses that look like expensive gemstones.” He has worked with recycled materials such as rubber bands, broken mirrors, and garbage bags. “I recycle them into fabulous haute couture pieces. I want people to be aware that they can create beautiful pieces from garbage,” he expressed.

Michael’s second ANTM episode was shot in Greece. It also featured the Filipino clothing brand Bench and international model, Georgina Wilson. “I was so happy when I learned that other Filipinos were in Greece for the shoot. The ANTM staff was in awe of Georgina Wilson’s beauty… It made me so proud to be a Filipino.” “To be chosen as the final runway designer like Roberto Cavalli and Vivienne Westwood is one of the biggest achievements in my career,” he added.

“I stayed for almost a month in Greece. We did the shoot last June. Aside from the final runway, I did the clothes for the motion editorials and the shoot with the remaining finalists directed by Tyra Banks. They asked me to create the designs for the six remaining finalists. The clothes were done in two days… I was so inspired from the place that I made the designs for my collection in my Red Cross Show in Shangri-La Hotel Makati last October, my solo show, and Slim’s show in Philippine Fashion Week, also last October.”

Michael has been in the Middle East since 1997. “Dubai is a melting pot in the Middle East. You usually experience racial discrimination anywhere in this world. Most of my clients are women from the Gulf area. At first I had clients who had doubts about me because of my nationality. But the moment I am able to convince them with the beautiful creations I make for them, they become confident. “Women in Dubai love haute couture. I think the best flagship stores by the top designers in the world can be found here. They travel a lot and most of them are educated abroad so they are updated with the latest trends in fashion,” he commented.

“My dream is to dress up Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett in a red carpet event,” he said when asked who his dream clients may be. Cinco is now the creative director of Michael Cinco Haute Couture in Dubai that specializes in wedding gowns and evening dresses. “It’s a dream come true,” he says. When asked about the Philippine fashion scene, he replies: “It’s going global.”

Cinco also designs other clothes apart from wedding or evening gowns. “I have clients from the royal family who love exotic animals as their pets. One princess asked me to dress up her leopard pet in animal print, another one asked me to make a cat suit for her python, and yet another client inquired if I could do crystallized clothes for a chimpanzee,” he reveals. “I don’t know if I’ll still be “normal” after that,” he jokes.

Meet the Aspiring Top Designers of Philippine Fashion

As the challenges in MEGA’s Young Designers Competition 2012 begin, let’s take a look on each of the Philippine Fashion designers that will battle for their mark in the industry.

Nikita Agatha boasts of being able to do anything from scratch. She picked up her flair for fashion from her grandmother and mom who loved dressing her up when she was little. She considers Sari Yap, editor in chief of MEGA Magazine, as the judge to please, urging Nikita to carefully think of her designs. She cites Alexander McQueen as her idol for his out of this world construction of outfits that women can wear.

Dino Bancoro recently started as a fashion designer sharing that the pieces he presented during the audition were his first ever creations. Through YDC, he hopes to learn more on pattern making and sewing since he has yet to formally study fashion design. He admits that he still needs polishing but is proud to say that he has the vision and creativity that would amaze people.

Hazel Cargado is a registered nurse. However, after graduating and passing the board, Hazel felt lost. Eventually, she decided to go back to what she really wanted. After finding a fashion design school in Manila, she quickly grabbed the opportunity to learn. Through YDC, she hopes to find her personal directions in design.

Mara Chua has a motto that anything and everything can be inspiring. He believes that to be successful, talent is not enough. He sharpened his technical skills in pattern making and learned sewing through a seamstress who made his clothes. He cites Rei Kawakubo and Bjork as inspirations that allowed him to expand his horizons and stretch his aesthetic.

Kirby Cruz wants to represent his feelings through his designs. His goal is to have an identity that makes his pieces unique. As a fresh fashion graduate, he feels the need for the right exposure and he believes YDC is the best venue for him. He loves the design of Hussein Chalayan and Alexander McQueen since Kirby is fascinated where these designers find their concepts and ideas.

Ched Dalogaog is a fashion instructor at one of the top fashion schools in Manila. He tells a story with his creations, incorporating pop culture and considering the modern women who will wear them. He believes his edge is his understanding of color, textures and fabrics that other designers take for granted. By joining YDC, he hopes to establish a brand that he can introduce to MEGA, hoping to also be acknowledged in the industry.

Corleen Duero specializes in constructing basics but still adding a touch of style. Hailing all the way from Surigao, Corleen is proud to represent the south and hopes to be a designer who can bridge fashion and design from Manila to Mindanao. He admires Issey Miyake, always remembering the quote of the designer, “These clothes are no wrappings, you can understand them the way you want, you can wear them the way you want.”

Oz Go’s designs dwell on futuristic and experimental looks. At a young age, he discovered his affinity for fashion when he became obsessed with drawing her mother’s wedding gown. He took a course in fashion design and eventually mounted a show during Philippine Fashion Week. Being the younger brother of singer Rachelle Ann Go, he is proud to mention that they still share the same room and creates outfits for her to wear.

Robin Gundran is the youngest member of this year’s competition. At 18 years old, he showed his creations and wowed the judges during the go-see. He received negative remarks from a lot of people who did not believe in his passion. However, he turned this into his motivation. He knows that with perseverance, he can show his detractors that he can get past them, and achieve fame and success.

Ann Lorio is an industrial engineer from Cavite who wanted to shift to fashion design. Despite her parents’ initial doubts on her dream, she travelled to Manila and worked to buy a sewing machine. After seeing her passion, her parents eventually showed support to her. With her background in engineering, Ann attacks a design starting with the structure. As a YDC contestant, she wants to learn and make her mark as a designer.

Cristian Mallabo believes that God has a purpose why he’s alive and in the competition. His mother attempted to abort him but he survived. For as long as he can remember, he’s had a passion for clothes. He was motivated when friends and family started to ask him to create party clothes for them. He wants to be known as a designer who can brave through any challenge and hopes to win in order to give back to his aunt and sisters.

Porfi Medina thinks of fashion more as a form of activism and advocacy. When he was in elementary, Porfi’s grandmother opened a dress shop. At that tender age, he would observe the fabrics and sewing, starting his dream to become a fashion designer. He views his craft as a form of expression, translating social issues and its relevance into ensembles. He wishes to convey a message on pressing issues in society with every design he makes.

Renan Pacson simply wants to make his family proud. He initially took up Hotel and Restaurant Management but eventually found his calling in fashion. He studied Clothing Technology and was lucky to have the support of his parents. Luckily, he was accepted not based on his audition pieces, but based on how he packaged himself. His biggest challenge is to find his signature aesthetic and intends to find this in YDC.

Ismael Palma tried his luck during the auditions for the first season of Gen M: YDC but did not make the cut. At that time, he still did not know how to sew so he took his failure as an opportunity to improve. He decided to learn more about sewing and developing his designs. He was accepted this year and shares that whatever the judges say, he will keep in mind and apply.

Erica Panlilio hopes to dress up Katy Perry because of her fun playful personality. She started looking up and imbibing the stylish attitude of her grandmother when she was young. During the go-see, she had a major setback because the judges thought that she had a styling problem. Still, she was chosen to be one of the finalists and she believes that through YDC, she can grow and become a top designer.

Ram Silva designs for a cause. He intends to help the dying weaving community in Panay and Iloilo. During the go-see, judges were surprised with his mix of native materials to create a modern look. He keeps in mind the advice of Sari Yap, EIC of MEGA magazine, that what other designers learn outside in six months to a year, they can experience and learn in YDC in two months.

Mary Ty is inspired by YDC alumna Furne One, hoping to be as successful as him. Mary has never joined a fashion competition because of her fear of rejection. She tried her luck by joining Philippine Fashion Week but did not succeed. Edwin Ao, another YDC alumna, urged her to join the upcoming YDC. Her quirky comments amused the judges and are sure to liven the intense challenges for the YDC hopefuls.

Geoffrey Zordilla has always wanted to study fashion design. Initially, he had to struggle with his parents’ disbelief. Still, he pursued his dreams and is currently a fashion design student. He is enthusiastic to experience YDC’s challenges and to learn how to mingle with fellow designers. Nature inspires him, feeling relaxed and comfortable in its serene environment.

Philippine Fashion Mogul Josie Natori Brings her Global Brand to Philippines

Philippine Fashion Mogul Josie Natori has been known in the United States as force in fashion and design since she founded The Natori Company in 1977. Now, the Manila-born fashion mogul is setting her sights on being a force globally, starting with the Philippines and neighboring Asian countries.

“We’re big in the United States now, how about being bigger in the Philippines and in Asia?” Natori said in an interview with the Asian Journal. The bold statement came a week after Natori opened their first boutiques in the Philippines at Rustan’s Makati and the Rustan’s Tower in the Shangri-la Plaza. The Natori brand is well-known for its signature “East meets West” approach to design, resulting in products that highlight “Asian aesthetics and sensibilities and the Western contemporary lifestyle,” according to Asian Journal. Her Spring/Summer 2012 collection, for instance, features many elements from the Philippines—from bags made of hand-woven abaca from Bulacan to belt buckles made out of Capiz shells.

Before founding the Natori Company, Josie Cruz Natori worked in wealth management firm Merrill Lynch, where she would eventually rise to become the firm’s first female Vice President in Investment Banking. After marrying Ken Natori, Josie Natori made the move from banking to entrepreneurship in 1977, after choosing from several possible business ventures. “I realized it had to be something I could relate to, something to do with the Philippines,” Natori said in a 2007 interview with the New York Sun.

Her fashion career began with blouses from the Philippines that were sold as nightwear in Bloomingdale’s. The rest, as they say, is history. The brand continues to expand globally, even as the US continues to feel the effects of the recession, noted Asian Journal. Recession or not, Natori said it’s all about producing things that women want. Natori’s entry to the Philippines was simply a matter of “right timing,” noting the growth in the Asian market. It may have taken 35 years for Natori to open boutiques in the Philippines, but the global fashion brand is making up for lost time. Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo invited her to be part of the Center for International Trade Exposition and Missions, a group whose mandate is to promote the Philippines in the global market.

Kol Hope Foundation For Children Presents Most Glamorous Filipino Ball on Earth

The Kol Hope Foundation For Children proudly presented the Philippine Presidential Gala, now known throughout the world as The Most Glamorous Filipino Ball on Earth. Over 400 of Toronto’s brightest stars, fashionistas, and the veritable who’s who among the Filipino Canadian scene attended the red carpet soirée held last Friday November 11, 2011 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Yorkville. The Filipino Ball is truly the first of its kind, an all out, extravagant, Cultural Showcase of the best in Philippine Culture, Philippine Fashion, Dance, Performance and Cuisine, all for a great cause, to help children born with Trisomy-related disabilities. The beautiful night was a celebration of Kol Rustia’s life, who passed away at the age of 14 on Oct 9, 2011. Kol is the inspiration and story behind the Kol Hope Foundation for Children.

The event began at 6PM with an all-media access, red carpet event. Amongst the Who’s Who attending were: Philippine Consul General Pedro Chan, Toronto’s Former Mayor of Toronto Barbara Hall, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Bill Graham, Miss Universe Canada Chanel Beckenlehner, Canadian Fashion Designers Baby Steinberg & Louie J. Manzo, Stephen Lynch make up artist for the acclaimed TV series Queer As Folk, casting Director Karyn Fine, Kelechi Achonu Fashion Editor for RGM, Bradley Schmale Head of Leading International Bank for HSBC, and Eric Aragon, Canada’s leading Event Designer.

The Gala dinner and program began at 7pm with a heart warming tribute video to Kol Rustia, a wonderful recap of this 14 year old boy’s life, and the great legacy that he has left behind; a legacy of love, courage, compassion and hope.

The video was followed by a beautiful welcome and tribute speech by Kol Hope Foundation for Children, President and Founder, and Kol’s grandmother, Melinda Parreno Rustia. Filipino- Canadian TV personality, Host of BPM:TV’s Club Fashion, Jeff Rustia, who is also Kol’s father, was the wonderful and entertaining Emcee for the evening. He then previewed the World Premiere of Kol’s World, a brand new groundbreaking, animated pre-school series, about a boy in a wheelchair and his two best pet friends.

And for the very first time ever in Four Seasons Hotel history, the hotel has launched an exclusive Filipino Fusion Menu, comprised of a three course meal starting with a Ginataang Calabasa Soup with Ginger and Coconut Crème Flake, followed by Roasted Adobo Chicken in a delicate Calamus Jus served with Mung Bean Rice Pilaf, and finished with a Guimaras Mango Mousse cake.

As dinner began, Rustia introduced the stellar line-up for the evening which included the country’s top Philippine Cultural Dance troupes in Canada, namely Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe and Cultural Philippines of Ontario, that performed their award winning Singkil and Tinikling, plus knock out performances from Ma-Anne Dionisio, the international star of Miss Saigon, Lilac Cana, the Award Winning Filipino Opera Singer, Colin Petierre, 12 year old Filipino Canadian Ballroom dance champ, Warren Dean Flandez, R&B Soul Singer, and star of CBC’s Cover Me Canada. The highlight of the performances was the special presentation of Rigodon de Honour by the KOL HOPE DANCERS, choreographed by Siony Srynka.

The showcase event of the night was the Presidential Awards, with the presentation of Awards to over 40 Presidents of Fil-Can Associations. The awards ceremony also paid tribute to 5 outstanding Filipinos for their global achievements, including, Arturo Viola, Zeny Gepilano, Carmelita Petierre Dosayla and Lilac Cana. The lifetime achievement award was given to Ruben Cusipag, for his incredible contributions to Filipino community journalism in Canada.

The evening also featured An Haute Couture and Ready to Wear Philippine Fashion Show presenting fashions by Joy Couture and JP Rangel. Special music was mixed and edited for the show, including a beautiful remix of Pilita Corrales “Dahil Sa Yo” with French Ambient beats. Simply Divine! The night ended with a fashionable competition for the “BEST TERNO EVENING GOWN “ with the 5 celebrity Judges choosing Tara Berkes, a Filipino Hungarian model who sported a one sided Butterfly leather evening gown.

The Kol Hope Foundation for Children is the first charitable organization of its kind in North America that helps children born with Trisomy-related disabilities. All proceeds go to benefit the Kol Hope Fund in the Hospital for Sick Kids, and Easter Seals Society of Canada. And 2 orphanages in the Philippines, namely Bacolod Boys Home and the Holy Infant Nursery in Bacolod City.

Their heart's desire was satisfied as more than 100 pieces of Philippine costumes, extraordinary couture gowns, and beautifully crafted ternos filled the runway.

Opening the evening was Moreno's collection of Muslim costumes in gold material with glass beads, brass bells and ornate metal headdresses worn by Charlene Gonzales in the 1994 Miss Universe that won in the national costume category. The night also featured Moreno's barong creations followed by a colorful collection of his modernized terno. The pieces displayed his famous reinvention of the garb with short vertical butterfly sleeves and cinched waists. Most had accents of either a floral beadwork or embroidery.

The show then livened up with his flamenco-inspired dresses complete with mantones de Manila, his black-and-white Maria Clara collection, and his famous 19th century-inspired Maria Clara gowns crafted from indigenous materials jusi, piAa and lepanto. Moreno's bridal collection became the most mesmerizing part of the night. It proved why it has always been a Filipina's dream to wear a Moreno gown on her wedding day. The pieces were grand with beautiful beadwork, endless trails and enchanting veils. The collection also featured Muslim wedding costumes, which showed the designer's complete devotion to Filipino culture and fashion.

The runway was star-studded as supermodels Izza Gonzales-Agana, Patty Betita, Suyen Chi, Marina Benipayo, Menchu Soriano, Annette Coronel-Cruz and Phoemela Baranda donned Moreno's famous works. Moreno always loved to dress beauty queens and several of them participated in the gala show including 2011 Miss Universe 4th runner-up Shamcey Supsup and 2010 Ms. Universe 4th runner-up Venus Raj, as well as past Bb. Pilipinas winners Dianne Necio, Bianca Manalo, Patricia Fernandez, Nina Ricci Alagao, and Marie Ann Umali. Host KC Concepcion expressed pride as she wore her first Pitoy terno while actors Sam Milby and Piolo Pascual both wore the designer's barongs. Siblings Megan and Lauren Young, Denise Laurel, Cecilia Schulze, Georgia Schulze-Del Rosario and Karylle also graced the runway.

Singers Gary Valenciano, Rico Blanco and Rem Zamora serenaded Moreno's muses while the music from the Manila Symphony Orchestra perfectly complemented Moreno's aesthetic. When Pitoy Moreno came out on stage, everyone cheered and gave the famed designer the ovation he truly deserved. Proceeds from the event was for the benefit of the Lopez Group Foundation, Inc. LGFI coordinates the Lopez Group's corporate social responsibility initiatives focused on education, health and wellness, humanitarian assistance, livelihood, environment, and the promotion of Philippine arts and culture.

Georgina Wilson to be Featured on America's Next Top Model

British-Filipina model and host Georgina Wilson joins the roster of Filipinos who were featured in the hit US reality search “America’s Next Top Model" (ANTM). Wilson posted on her Twitter account Wednesday that she will appear in the 17th cycle of the popular modeling show hosted and produced by top model Tyra Banks.

She said she “joined as a guest model/stylist," representing the Philippine Fashion clothing line, Bench, which served as the clothing sponsor for the semi-finals of the current “all-star" competition that gathered the favorite finalists from the past ANTM seasons. “I told the girls what to do for their semi-finals challenge," Wilson said. “We shot it in Greece and I can’t wait for it to come out."

The episode will air on Nov. 9 in the US and it will be shown in the Philippines on Nov. 14, Bench announced on its Facebook page. Before Wilson’s stint, the popular model search had invited US-based Philippine Fashion Designer Oliver Tolentino, whose gowns—made of abaca and piña—were featured in the “all-star" season.

Dubai-based Philippine Fashion Designer Michael Cinco, whose line of recycled 'couture' had been already featured in Cycle 16 last year, will headline the Finals episode of the show. Wilson tweeted that Cinco created the clothes for the Finals and that they were together during the Greece taping.

Lisa Damato, who is so far one of the remaining models in the show, had gotten acquainted with both Wilson and Cinco, and tweeted: "I love the Philippines! I want to go there!"

Philippine Fashion Designer and Jeweler Featured In Moscow Fashion Show

Philippine Fashion Designer Cora Manimbo and Fashion Jeweler Oscar Atendido wowed audiences with their works during the "Power Fashion Show for a Cause" in Moscow, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. In a news release on Saturday, the DFA said the fashion show was held at the Eight and a Half Dollar Restaurant-Café-Bar in Moscow last September 23, 2011.

The show was a project of the Asia-Pacific Women's Group (APWG) of Moscow and the Filipino organization Bayanihan ng Bayan ni Juan. The DFA said proceeds of the fashion show were for the benefit of the special children of Tretyakov and the adopted orphanages of the APWG, a group of ladies based in Moscow led by the spouses of the Ambassadors to Russia from 21 Asia-Pacific countries.

Manimbo has designed dresses not only for Philippine Fashion clients but also those of other nationalities, including royal members in Asia. For the fashion show in Moscow, the DFA said Manimbo featured her creative interpretations of traditional Philippine dresses like the baro't saya and terno, using indigenous Philippine fabrics with intricate embroidery and beadwork. Meanwhile, Atendido, who also directed the fashion show, showcased his Philippine handcrafted filigree fashion jewelry collection, wrought in gold and handcrafted in an alley of silver and copper electroplated in 24-karat gold.

This is the last fashion show that I covered last Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012. This year, Ipanema collaborated with five Philippine Fashion Designers to create their own clothing design inspired by the collection. The five designers, Catherine Cavilte, Lyle Ibanez, Anthony Nocom, Dave Ocampo and Raoul Ramirez, crafted the Resort Wear Collection that featured distinctive style and design, one that truly underscores vivacious living.

So fashion-forward men and women, brace yourselves as Ipanema, the stylish Brazilian flip-flop brand, is once again showcased their latest Resort Wear Collection for Spring-Summer 2012. The changing of fashion seasons is enough to keep most stylistas on their toes – literally. These five fashion mavens were chosen not only for their modern and edgy design visions but also for their understanding of Philippine Fashion discerning style and taste. Here they are:

Nocom's look was inspired from the bold beach colors from the Ipanema Surf Tomas Masc II and the classic black and white tribal prints of Ipanema Classica Urbana Masc.

Dave Ocampo

His collection celebrates the colors of summer and feminism to emphasize the silhouette of women, using spandex and stretch tool material with floral and circular prints combined with bright and vibrant colors that are very comfortable in terms of cuts and designs.

Lyle Ibanez

Ibanez’s look for Ipanema Resort Wear Collection 2012 was inspired from the Ipanema Ritmos II Ad, a sling back flip-flops that has flowers appliqués and subtle geometric patterns.

Raoul Ramirez

For Ipanema Resort Wear Collection 2012, he created a look that based on the metallic characteristics of the Ipanema New Trance Fem and the floral accents of the elevated aesthetics of the Ipanema Ritmos Ad.

Ariel 3D Deep Clean 3D Projection Mapping Fashion Show feat. Bench

Greek-Inspired Michael Cinco Collection

A year after his colleague Furne One drew raves for his Alexander McQueen-esque collection, it will be the turn of another Philippine Fashion Designer based in the Middle East, Michael Cinco, to shine as he presents a 40-piece collection in the annual Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) Fashion Gala on October 16 at Makati Shangri-La’s Rizal Ballroom.

Inspired mainly by his recent travel to Greece, particularly Athens and the remote island of Santorini, the collection is a play on soft and hard, rigid and fluid elements. “It can be anything, from the statues to the columns, as well as colors and barely seen details of elements I chanced upon during my travels,” said Cinco, who’s been based in Dubai since the late ’90s. “The sources are endless, to be honest.” Cinco, who was attending to a client in neighboring Abu Dhabi, replied to our questions through e-mail.

Color as transition

“In my heart of hearts, I feel that I descended from some Greek god or goddess, which probably explains my fascination with Greece. It has been an endless source of inspiration for me,” he said. Instead of grouping his pieces into suites, Cinco uses color as transition—from neutrals such as light gray to white and black, to bolder, more vibrant yellow, orange and red. “It’s not about whether they’re short or long dresses,” he added. “I don’t want to make the usual and predictable day dresses and evening gowns.”

The show is all about giving Manila fashionistas an idea of how to wear, Cinco said, “my vision.” He also wants to give them the freedom to mix and match his pieces with clothes by other designers, depending on their mood. The plan is to devote the first segment to daywear with short, flowing chiffon dresses, and men’s suits and jackets. Beaded evening gowns will dominate the second segment; the final segment will be wedding gowns. “I want people to see a more wearable collection,” he said. “For sure, there will be embellishments. I’m toying with the idea of using porcelain and black mirror.”

He’ll also use laser-cut ceramics, acrylic and mother-of-pearl shells on jackets and short dresses. Cinco will also unveil “out-of-this-world” prints—actually minute embroideries and sequins. But the pressure, he admitted, is on. Cinco, who had the chance to show his range as a designer a few years ago in Philippine Fashion Week, acknowledges that this will be his biggest show in Manila. “I’m excited and nervous at the same time, as I’m showing to a different audience,” he said. “I’m flattered as well because Tessa (Prieto-Valdes) and Kaye (Tinga) gave me the chance to showcase my collection to raise funds for a worthy endeavor.”

Fourth year

This is the fourth year Valdes and Tinga are co-chairing the event to raise P3 million for the benefit of PNRC Rizal Chapter and Assumption High School Class of ’81 Foundation. Tickets are at P10,000 per seat. Tables are also available at P100,000 each for groups of 10. The show’s main presentor is Megaworld, with Audi, Etihad Airways and Smart Infinity. Other sponsors are Sun Life Financial, HSBC, Pond’s, Resorts World Manila, Makati Shangri-La and Fila. “I have been working on my collection for months now,” Cinco shared. “But welcome breaks such as my travels have helped me to evolve the concept. When I finally did my mood board, I coordinated with the director to discuss the concept in detail.” This year’s show will be directed by Ariel Lozada and styled by Noel Manapat. Patrick Rosas and his team will do the models’ hair and makeup.

Comparisons between him and One are also in order. Cinco is ready for centerstage. “I must say that Furne did an amazing collection last year,” he said. “Furne and I respect each other. I’m so happy for him that Filipino audiences accepted his work. I hope they do the same to me. After all, I’m also a Filipino who simply wants to take part in this worthy project.” Cinco grew up in Samar with images of Hollywood goddesses Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn swimming in his head.

Their public personas, magnified a thousand times by their fabulous outfits, and his lush rural surroundings inspired him to go into fashion. By 1988, Cinco was a fine-arts scholar. He took up fashion courses at Slim’s in 1991 before becoming a designer a year later doing hotel and office uniforms for a Japanese firm. Encouraged by a friend to try his luck in Dubai, then a booming financial and cultural hub in the Middle East, Cinco made the big move in 1997. His first job proved to be daunting, as he was tasked to change the image of a big but slightly staid fashion house. Word soon spread of how good he was, and before long, Dubai’s fashionable women were beating the path to his door. Rather than sit on his laurels, Cinco left Dubai for a yearlong sabbatical in London and Paris to soak up the fashion scene and study special fashion courses at Central Saint Martins.

He went back to Dubai in 2003 to open his own couture house. As creative director of Michael Cinco Haute Couture, he caters mainly to women in need of elegant, one-of-a-kind wedding gowns and evening dresses.

Apart from being a regular at Dubai Fashion Week, Cinco has had the chance to show his pieces to international audiences during such events as Swarovski 7even and Miami Fashion Week. His clothes have also been worn by celebrities, including British pop singer Lilly Allen and American socialite and recent Manila visitor Paris Hilton. Most recently, Cinco’s “eco-couture” creations were featured in the latest season of “America’s Next Top Model,” impressing host Tyra Banks and judges Nigel Barker and Andre Leon Tally.

“I’ve been designing for more than 20 years now,” he said. “I can’t imagine doing anything else other than fashion.”

Kermit Tesoro: Footwear Collection for Philippine Fashion

Young Philippine Fashion designer Kermit Tesoro gained fame in the international fashion scene as his tall, heel-less shoes strutted the London Fashion Week runway this month. Tesoro's heel-less wedges and skull heels were featured in the Spring/Summer 2012 collection of French-born designer Florian Jayet, who was part of the Fashion Mode show of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout last Sept. 17.

Tesoro has a degree in Visual Communications from the University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Fine Arts. His footwear collection, which comes in different designs like heelless wedges, stilettos, and booties -- are available online, with prices ranging from $300 to $800.

He also took up Fashion Design in the Fashion Institute of the Philippines, and Fashion Marketing at the School of Fashion and the Arts. Tesoro has graced three consecutive Philippine Fashion Week events from 2009 to 2011. Jayet, on the other hand, is a former intern for the famed British fashion designer.

Weaving the Future of Philippine Fashion

A mini fashion show with modern Filipino designs by FDCP members and past Philippine Fashion Design Competition winners using local weaves like piña, jusi, abaca, etc. was presented to the press, along with “Weaving The Future” ambassadors Amina Aranaz-Alunan, Tweetie de Leon-Gonzalez and Mons Romulo.

The “Weaving the Future” competition is comprised of several stages, the first of which required applicants to submit design entries (three design entries of a 3-5 piece mini collection for apparel, and three design entries of a single piece for accessories/ home decor). Applicants were also asked to submit a developmental business plan that includes materials used, positive impact on the community, projected profits, etc. The aim is to develop designers who are not only talented, but who are aware of the social and environmental impact of their designs.

The First Philippine Fashion Ball was held at the Rigodon Ballroom of The Manila Peninsula Hotel last August 15, 2011. It was organized by Preview and hosted by Sanya Smith, the anniversary party ushered in Preview’s much-awaited Best-Dressed Ball that gave recognition to the movers and shakers of the Philippine Fashion industry. Together for the last 10 years, Topshop and Preview have been promoting the best in cutting-edge fashion; thus, they gathered their friends, celebrities, loyal patrons, and the biggest names in fashion to toast the brands’ success.

Project Runway Philippines Season 3: Return of Philippine Fashion in TV

Have you watched Project Runway Philippines before? Personally I didn't watch it before but I read some reviews and articles about this show and they all say that this is very overwhelming since it always showcases Philippine Fashion. After a two-year hiatus, Project Runway Philippines will make a comeback to Philippine television for its third season and serve up another round of trend setting ideas, catty contestants and lots of sewing room drama—just how we like it.

Project Runway is just one of the many TV shows that have local franchises but it’s one of the few that viewers can sit through without cringing. The producers have done a good job in staying faithful to the original concept while injecting a reasonable dose of the Philippine’s own brand of soap opera-like character development, exposition, conflict, climax and resolution.

In an effort to make the show more mass-oriented, the powers that be decided to enlist Tweetie de Leon-Gonzales to replace Teresa Herrera as host. They aim for season 3 to be “very relatable to all. To achieve that, we have to bring in a host who not only understands the dynamics of fashion, but one who is an icon of our pop culture or a familiar face on TV, at the very least,” according to a statement.

Rajo Laurel and Apples Aberin will return to their seats on the judging panel while Jojie Lloren resumes his role as mentor to the contestants. Weekly guest judges will be important names in the fashion scene who have reached international acclaim. Challenges are to focus on the Filipino identity and will incorporate elements of local materials and culture to explore the potential of everything Pinoy. Something to look forward to are the twists as the show starts with 14 contestants but only 12 challenges are planned.

Viewers can also expect a higher level of production as Season 3 will be directed by award-winning French director and producer Henri de Lorme, a fixture in the advertising circuit. The show also introduces the Asian Institute of Fashion, the contestants’ new design home. The school boasts a faculty including Jojie, Inno Sotto and Lulu Tan Gan—some of the country’s top designers. And the models to bring life to the contestants’ designs on the runway will be members of the prestigious Professional Models Association of the Philippines, no less. This definitely ups the ante a few notches of fierceness.

Project Runway Philippines has helped jumpstart the careers of budding designers. Season 1 winner Aries Lagat, an instructor at the Philippine Institute of Fashion, is an editorial staple. Meanwhile, Veejay Floresca is a favorite designer to the stars and Philip Tampus has a thriving atelier in Cebu. Season 2 winner Manny Marquez is now a mentor himself at the AIF and his runner-up, Russell Villafuerte, is enjoying the fruits of his exposure on the show, saying that “what matters is what you do after the competition.”

I just wanted to share right now one of the Philippine Fashion Designers who brings honor to Philippines because of his style. Adante Leyesa creates handmade fashion accessories that he hopes will enhance further the beauty of the Filipino women.

“Every Filipina to me is beautiful. Some of them just lack the confidence needed to accentuate that beauty,” Adante says. The 32-year old designer owns Adanté Collections. His passion for his craft stemmed from his hobby of making accessories for his family and friends. He later introduced his creations in bazaars where he would cross paths with stylists and like-minded designers who saw great potential in his designs.

Adante uses intricate and bold features, resulting to head-turning designs. He often integrates at least four materials for each piece, and applies a multi-step process that makes his creations very sturdy. Adante, together with Leo Bartolome, his partner in the business in terms of design, maintain a meticulous attitude when it comes to the quality of their Fashion Accessories.

He also tagged along a number of out-of-school youth from his hometown in Lipa City in Batangas in making the accessories. Adante says he is able to find a way to make his fellow Batangueños learn more about accessory making. His creations were later used in one fashion shoot after another. With his keen eye on quality, Adante would later be tapped by big names in fashion, particularly during the yearly Philippine Fashion Week.

Adante, who describes his designs as bold and regal, says he takes inspiration from the people around him and that his work is motivated by the person wearing his accessories. “These accessories are meant to be worn by women who are not afraid to make a statement, who are fashion forward, who want more options and won't settle for safe fashion accessories,” he says.

His biggest break yet is his collaboration with actress-designer Solenn Heussaff for Knit Queen and fashion designer Lulu Tan Gan. In bazaars, Adante’s accessories are sold for P1,000 to P7,000. He recognizes the potential of his creations for the export market, but his priority is to make the accessories available to Filipino women.

Politicians and celebrities are expected to make a fashion statement in this year's State of the Nation Address (SONA) that was held last Monday 25 July, 2011 afternoon at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City. The dress code at the Batasang Pambansa for the SONA is quite tricky—there are only so many fashionable ways to wear the barong, baro’t saya, Filipiniana, and Maria Clara while still keeping to the formality of the event.

Philippine Fashion Designers Pays Metrowear Tribute to Filipiniana

One hundred designers presented their interpretations of the terno and barong Tagalog in a Philippine Fashion event last Thursday night June 30, 2011. Participating in "Metrowear Filipiniana" are designers from all major design groups. The event, organized by Metro magazine, aims to commemorate the Philippines’ 113th year of independence.

Different interpretations of the traditional Filipino dress are expected to be seen during the event. The Young Designers’ Guild will present avant-garde, while the Fashion and Design Council of the Philippines and the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines will take on red carpet gowns and cocktail dresses, respectively.

International Filipino designers Albert Andrada, Cary Santiago and Ezra will showcase theatrical creations. Those from Cebu will present bridal interpretations, while independent designers will do modern pieces. The show will also have a men’s wear collection, featuring designs by Anthony Nocom, Gerry Katigbak, Aries Lagat, Joey Samson, Jerome Lorico, Jeffrey Rogador and Barge Ramos, among many others.

A segment during the show will also showcase the works of Filipiniana masters Mike dela Rosa, Loreto, Patis Tesoro, Danilo Franco, Efren Ocampo, Greg Centeno and Nolie Hans. Other well-known designers who will take part in "Metrowear Filipiniana" include Rajo Laurel, John Herrera, Randy Ortiz, JC Buendia, Fanny Serrano, Avel Bacudio and Francis Libiran.

On top of these is an exhibit featuring jewelry, bags, accessories and shoe designs by Amina Aranaz-Alunan, Rocio, Ana Rocha, Nicole Whisenhunt, Michelline Syjuco, Cesar Gaupo and Mich Dulce. The terno is primarily composed of a baro (blouse), saya (long skirt) and panuelo (a cloth placed over the shoulders and back, just like a shawl) of the same pattern.

Initially considered as daily wear, it has become the attire for formal events and state occasions in the Philippines. The barong Tagalog, meanwhile, is an embroidered formal garment usually made of piña, jusi or banana fabric.

Visualzine Fashion + Art Exhibit with Fashion Academy Manila

Philippine Fashion Week was already finished but still the Fashion Style still goes on and on. Last May 27, 2011 I was invited to cover the Visualzine fashion and art exhibit. The exhibit was star-studded with local personalities named Maxene Magalona, Rich Asuncion, Bubbles Paraiso, Tim Yap, Raymond Gutierrez and some fashion models of Visualzine.

Visualzine together with Fashion Academy Manila intends to bring it all together under one roof to become a springboard for anyone who is passionate about modeling, design, photography and beauty. Featuring seven specialized curriculums focusing on Photography, Make-Up, Hair Creatives, Fashion, Styling, Modeling, Artists’ lab and Personality Enhancement, the academy provides a platform by which an inherent skill can be developed through practical application.

Philippine Fashion Week 2011 is almost over. Another update that I will share to you guys was the Penshoppe‘s Fashion Show for the PWF 2011. I receive an invite for this so I’m a bit closer to the catwalk compare to Wrangler’s Fashion Show that is open to the public.

A little information about Penshoppe Clothing, It provides a variety of styles to choose from and constantly update its collection. Started in 1986, today Penshoppe is recognized as one of the market leaders in the Philippine fashion, accessories and personal care product industry.

This season, Penshoppe steps up with its campaign, “Trailblazer” — the collection depicts those who conduct their lives off the beaten path: an innovator and pioneer, as it were. A leader is innovative inasmuch as people WANT to follow him or her, and DO — thus, a trailblazer must be emulated, so to speak. Here’s another update for the Philippine Fashion Week 2011. Candie’s joins Philippine’s largest fashion show in a first-ever conceptual frozen fashion show on May 14, at the Mall of Asia, which will be transformed into a Winter Sartorial Wonderland.

Candie’s, the pop culture brand from the US, which was founded in 1981 and originally known for their high-heeled wood bottom slides, has evolved into a full-range clothing label that has an exciting and hip range of pick-and-mix options.

Candie’s will showcase its take on modern-day princesses: poetic bohemians, midnight rebels, prima ballerinas and romantic daydreamers are super-cooled in a crystalline runway. Favorite style bloggers Camille Co (itscamilleco.com), Kryz Uy (thirstythought.wordpress.com), Laureen Uy (breakmystyle.com) and Lissa Kahayon (chictopia.com/lissakahayon) will make runway fashion their own as they reinterpret Candie’s. Catch Maxene Magalona, Elmo Magalona and PBB Teen Clash of 2010: Ann Li, Fretzie Bercede, Tricia Santos, Bret Jackson, Ivan Dorschner and James Reid.

Also, watch out for the current Candie’s girl Vanessa Hudgens as she fronts the current campaign with her dusky charms. Philippine Fashion Week 2011 is getting near from the news of L’Oreal Paris partnership with the Philippine Fashion Week and here’s the latest news for the PWF 2011. The Popular clothing brand Bench has revealed the line-up of celebrity models to be featured in this year's biggest fashion event.

A total of forty (40) Bench celebrity models will walk down the ramp for the Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2011 to be staged on May 8, 6:00 in the evening at the SMX Convention Center Halls 1 and 2, Seashell Lane at the MOA.

Hunk actors Piolo Pascual, Diether Ocampo, Dingdong Dantes, Zanjoe Marudo, Coco Martin, Rafael Rosell, Jake Cuenca and newcomer Albie Casiño join the long list of Bench celebrity models who will participate in the fashion show, as follows:

This may be the reason why Philippine Fashion Week made a decision to have partnership with L’Oreal Paris Philippines. This is a very important partnership!” boasted Joey Espino, founder and executive producer of Philippine Fashion Week (PFW). He was referring to the event’s team up with L’Oreal Paris. “The trust and commitment of a global brand like L’Oreal Paris means that the creativity and talent of the Filipino designers and models are truly world class,” he proudly declared.

For his part, Arnaud de Fontgalland, country division general manager of L’Oreal Paris said the Philippine Fashion Week will be a great venue to show how committed his company is to coming up with products that exceed their customers’ expectations. “Anything and everything we have done has been fuelled by the desire to elevate the world of cosmetics,” he added.

Luc Olivier-Marquet, managing director of L’Oreal Paris Philippines, said the partnership will result into an extraordinary event. “We at L’Oreal are thrilled to be partnering with one of the biggest and longest running fashion event in the country.
